Dr. Terese Venus and Daphne Santiago attended and presented at the FAO’s Workshop on Resilience and Sustainability in Tropical Fruit Value Chains in Rome, Italy (15.05.2024 – 16.05.2024)

Dr. Terese Venus and Daphne Santiago presented on community development through residue valorization at the Food and Agriculture Organization’s Workshop on Resilience and Sustainability in Tropical Fruit Value Chains.

Dr. Terese provided an overview of the research study by the Bioeconomy Economics Research Group, focusing on the possible impact of the bioeconomy transition on tropical fruit value chains in Ghana, Costa Rica, and the Philippines. Meanwhile, Daphne focused on community development from pineapple fiber processing in the Philippines, emphasizing its economic, social, and environmental impacts and sustainability challenges in rural areas.

The FAO Responsible Fruits Team organized the workshop from May 15–16, 2024. The objectives of the workshop were to review the challenges and trends of tropical fruits, explore solutions for collective action, and present practical tools and guides for responsible business conduct and climate adaptation and mitigation. It also aimed to bring together various stakeholders in different tropical value chains, such as pineapple, avocado, and banana.

The two-day event was a great opportunity to learn more about tropical fruit value chains, share information about the research group, and meet stakeholders from different parts of the world.
